Greetings from the College of Saint Giles to all! The College of St. Giles is hosting a University of Ithra session for the St. Giles Grand Ithra Session. Welcome to the annual St Giles Grand Ithra, boasting classes for the absolute beginner and advanced student alike! This year's classes will include children's classes, required classes and others of various interests.
Pre-registration is required. Registration closes on Wednesday, November 1, 2000.

The classes listed on the next page will held on Saturday, Nov 4. They are designed with the younger members in mind. Students must register for the classes and pay the Matriculation fee if they are first time students of Ithra, just as any other student does. However, the Registration fee for those students that are taking the Children's Classes and no other classes is $1.00. Students must be at least 4 yrs old or older depending on the class (see the individual class descriptions) and able to attend a class without their parent(s). Their parents are welcome to be in the class as well, of course. All students in these classes must have a parent or legal guardian on campus at all times. Minor Waivers and Medical Consent Forms will be required.

1 hr - $1.00, max 6 Idea's to help lead and give direction to finding a persona for the young person. Please bring pencil and paper. A small handout is provided.
Beading for Children - Ellowyne 1 hr - $5.00, max 5 The instructor will show children how to put together a necklace to take home with them. All materials are supplied to put together a necklace.
Needlepoint for Children - Lady Aliena Searover
2 hrs - $2.00, max 10 Instruction in needlepoint embroidery, with a project to take away for homework. Ages 6-16. Projects will vary in complexity with age of children. Parents are welcome to attend. Please bring scissors if you have them.

Silver Whale Persona Development - Lady Tatiana Alexievna & Maestro Artimis de Montessori 2 hrs - $1.00 The Silver Whale Persona Competition is an annual event held at Seagirt's Summer Tourney. It is an opportunity to present an authentic and logical persona you have created who could have existed before the year 1650. (This is not to be a recreation of an historic, fiction, or SCA character.) The event is not a competition to win against others, but to accomplish the goal of presenting a piece of successful theatre. This means bringing together everything - from knowledge, bearing and attitude to props and aids such as food, costume(s), and skills and activities needed to make the persona a whole, living, believable person. We will discuss the various aspects of the competition, what it takes to prepare and how to successfully compete. The handout will include competition guidelines, tips and a beginning of a bibliography to help get you started. Bring notetaking material if you wish.
Basic Skill at Arms - Lord Allan Robbins
2 hrs - $2.00, max 15 Basic attack, defense and movement, mental and physical preparation are also discussed. The class will be centered around sword and shield. Please bring: Sword (rattan or bokken), shield if possible.
Basic Heraldry - Sir Scellanus of Skye
4 hrs - $2.00 A brief historical survey of heraldry in the middle ages (roughly from 1100 to 1485, the SCA heraldic period) followed by SCA heraldry. The survey will cover such things as heraldic design, heraldry in the field, designing your device and discovering your name.
History of Costume - Mistress Maelen of Catcott
4 hrs - $3.50 This course will focus on Western European costume development, including accessories, between AD 600 and 1600. We will also consider appropriate fabrics, colors and patterns for different periods, and some styles from other cultures. An extensive handout will be provided
How to be a Lady-in-Waiting - Countess Melissa Kendal of Westmoreland
2 hrs - 50¢ From confidante to go-for, the lady-in-waiting is an indispensable member of the royal retinue. Here is one former lady-in-waiting and Queen's point of view of the SCA lady-in-waiting.
History of Lace - HL Beatrice Cairistin Fraser 2 hrs - $3.00, max 15 An introduction to lace within the SCA time frame. Will include history and identification, period uses for lace, and how to find and choose modern lace for your late-period persona. Please bring examples of lace you would like to identify or use on a costume.
Costuming: Garb on a Budget (but that doesn't look it) - HL Judith de Montgomerie 2 hrs - 50¢, max 10 We'll take a walk through the how, where and what, of pulling bits and pieces of fabric, trim, lace and leather together to make: great garb on very little money. Bring creativity, ideas, enthusiasm and note-taking materials.
Marshalling 101 - Countess Aryana Silknfyre 2 hrs - $3.00 Introduction to marshalling for the Society of Creative Anachronism. the class includes an overview of tournament and war marshalling, armor and weapons inspection, safety issues and crowd control. The current minimum SCA standards and current information regarding the AnTir Book of Combat are provided. Please bring notetaking materials.

Chivalry and Etiquette - Master Gerhard Kendal and Mistress Amanda Kendal 4 hrs - $2.50 The history and development of chivalry and its relationship to behaviour in the Current Middle Ages. Etiquette within the SCA will be discussed, with examples. The students will participate in actual incidents involving the subject matter. NOTE: Students should bring: a goblet, trencher, eating utensils and questions.
Survey of Medieval Arts - Mistress Maelen of Catcott 4 hrs - $2.00 This course will cover Western European architecture, sculpture, painting, calligraphy, music and more in slides and description of works from the fall of Rome to the Renaissance. Major trends and movements will be discussed, as well as their relationship to social and political trends of the time. This is a survey course and we can only cover things briefly and superficially in the time allowed. Students should bring note-taking materials.
Beginning Freehand Embroidery - HL Judith de Montgomerie 4 hrs - $2.00, max 10 The class will show students the first basic stitches that will get them started in freehand embroidery. Students should bring a 6" embroidery hoop, creative energy and enthusiasm. A handout and materials are supplied.
SCA Combat Archetypes - Maestro Artemis di Montessori 4 hrs - 50¢ A philosophical discussion of the role models that SCA participants represent when they take the field. Bring note-taking materials.
Marshalling 201 - Countess Aryana Silknfyre 2 hrs - $3.00, max 15 Advanced education suitable to advance a marshal to senior status. Includes hands on use of marshalling staves, inspection of weaponry and armor with emphasis on safety and minimum standards. Discussion on handling heated issues and the marshal's status in the eric and on the war field. Armour inspection standards, SCA minimum and ABC Marshal Authorization Card are provided. We Won! Now What?!?!?!? - Countess Aryana Silknfyre 2 hrs - $1.50 Salon style discussion on what to do when the fighter wins the Championship, the Coronet or the Crown. How to be prepared in mind and tourney chest. What it can mean to a relationship. What to talk about before the tourney, and after. An opportunity for straight answers where all questions are allowed. Copies of Corpora on rules of membership for entering a tourney and peerage standards as set by Corpora are provided.
Constabulary - Countess Melissa Kendal of Westmoreland 4 hrs - $2.00 Here is the perfect opportunity to learn the basics, as well as the finer points, of constabling, whether you are experienced or new to the craft. The Deputy Kingdom Training Constable, well experienced in both the Society and modern aspects of constabling, will guide you through the necessary skills. This class is especially recommended for anyone who simply want to be of service to their Barony or Shire. Subjects to be covered include basic constabulary, setting up and running a gate, the joys and complications of vehicle parking, taking care of lost and found, and what to do and what not to do. There will also be role play, covering how to be effective on patrolling and situation handling.
Middle Eastern Costume - Lady Halima al-Rakkasa 2 hrs - $3.00, max 12 Look at the clothing of the Middle East and how it changed through time and culture. This is not a sewing class but it will give you images and ideas for creating your own clothing. An extensive handout is provided.
Basic Middle Eastern Dance - Lady Halima al-Rakkasa 2 hrs - 50¢, max 12 This class focuses on the foundational moves of Middle Eastern dance. The class starts with 30 min of warm-ups and stretches, followed by progressive movement, where each move builds on or adds to the previous move. Wear clothes for dancing with hip belt or scarf.

Titles, Orders and Ranks - HL Sgt Duncan Macquarrie 2 hrs - $1.00 A discussion of the use of titles in the SCA and in period. We will debate the concept of "landedness" as it applies to the SCA and the differences between period practice and the SCA game. Bring notetaking materials.
Basic Chain Maille - Lord John de Galeau 2 hrs - $2.00, max 15 Brief history of maille, construction of 4 in 1 and 6 in 1 maille. Materials to practice with and a handout are provided. Please bring 2 pliers.
Hand Sewing - HL Annica van Heusden 2 hrs - $1.50, max 12 Basic stitches for handsewing seams and hems will be taught. A basic understanding of garment construction is very helpful. Please bring a pair of scissors and a seam gauge if possible. Handout & materials provided.
"Constable 54; Where are you?" Radio Procedure for SCA Events - Lord Erasmus the Traveller 1-2 hrs - $1.00, max 12 A course on very basic radiotelephone procedures for Constables, Chirurgeons, Heralds and Autocrats. How to make efficient and effective use of this latest tool of the autocrat team, with examples from both within and without the SCA. Please bring notetaking materials.
Religions of the SCA Period - HL Mathieu Thibaud Chaudeau de Montblanc 2 hrs - 50¢ Despite the SCA policy on overt religious practice at events, religion was the driving force of the Middle Ages. A lot of your persona's time was spent in a place of worship. Which one was it? How often would you go? What other influence did religion have in your persona's life? Please bring notetaking materials.
Basic Dance - Master Gerhard Kendal of Westmoreland 4 hrs - $1.00, minimum 6 Dancing was one of the most important activities of the Middle Ages. Learn pavannes, bransles, galliards and other court dances. Students should wear comfortable clothing and footwear and bring a mug for water.
Intermediate Freehand Embroidery - HL Judith de Montgomerie 4 hrs - $2.00, max 10 The class will show students some more stitches in freehand embroidery. Students should bring a 6" embroidery hoop, creative energy and enthusiasm.Students must have taken the Beginning Freehand Embroidery or have instructor's permission. A handout and materials are provided.
Gate Duty - Countess Melissa Kendal of Westmoreland 2 hrs - $2.00 An opportunity to learn a part of constabling, whether you are experienced or new to the craft. The emphasis will be on setting up and running a gate. The Kingdom Constable, will guide you through the necessary skills. This class is especially recommended for anyone who simply want to be of service to their Kingdom, Barony or Shire. This information is included in the Constabulary class.
Russian History Part I OR Where Are All The Vikings Rushin' ? - Boyarina Nadezhdha Toranova 2 hrs - $1.50 A look at Russian History from the arrival of the Vikings to the arrival of the Mongols... Russia's greatest period, followed by it's bleakest.
Persona Development - HL Baroness Theocharista Irena Diaconia 2 hrs - $2.00, max 10 This course will help you choose and develop a well-rounded persona inluding a personal history, the details of your current life and how the world you live in affects you. A handout including a questionnaire to help develop a persona is provided. Please bring notetaking materials.
Fencing Appreciation - Don Mathieu Thibaud Chaudeau de Montblanc 2 hrs - 50¢ This course is to introduce students to the world of practices sword-play. Student's should gain an appreciation of good sword-work and how practices sword-play has influenced history. This course is meant for non-fencers but fencers are welcome. Please bring notetaking materials.
The Art of Dyaling - HL Baron Uilleam mac Alan vic Hamish 2 hrs - $2.00, max 15 The class will cover the design and construction of Sun Dials... Types of Sundials to be discussed will include equatorial, polar plane and polar style. In addition to the class, the students will have the opportunity to design a sundial for extra credit. Students must bring note-taking materials.
Blackwork - HL Annica Van Heusden 2 hrs - $1.50, max 10 This course will cover a brief history of blackwork embroidery which was popular in the 15th & 16th centuries. The Holbien stitch will be taught. Students: Please bring scissors and embroidery hoop.

Your Home in the Middle Ages - Master Gerhard Kendal of Westmoreland 4 hrs - $4.00 A description and illustration of the things that make a house a home...how your home would have looked both inside and out: furnishings, decor, kitchens and day-to-day operation. The concentration will be on noble's homes in England from 650 AD to 1650 AD. Middle class and peasant homes will also be touched on. This is not an architecture course, but is intended to help you visualize your own persona's home. There is an extensive handout.
Development of Towns in Northern Russia During the Viking Era - Boyarina Nadezhdha Toranovna 4 hrs - 50¢ An examination of where, how and why towns were established in Russia, and how they grew and developed in the period between 800 and 1100 AD. Focus will be on the towns of Gorodische and Novgorod. We will examine trade routes, history, and the information revealed by the excavations.
Advanced Freehand Embroidery - HL Judith de Montgomerie 4 hrs - $2.00, max 10 The class will teach six of the more intricate types of freehand embroidery. Material to start a sampler and a handout will be provided. Students should bring a 6" embroidery hoop, needles, and floss. Students must have taken the Freehand Embroidery or have instructor's permission.
Advanced Rapier Technique - Don Mathieu Thibaud Chaudeau de Montblanc 4 hrs - 50¢, max 10 The instructor will present you with a tool for self-examination and show how to use it to become a well-rounded fencer. The full list of basic techniques will be discussed and combinations and permutations of them will be explored. Please bring notetaking materials and full fencing gear.
History of Toys - Master Cathal Sean O'connlauin 2 hrs - $2.00 A brief history of toys until 1600 AD. The class will include ideas for constructing your own toys. An extensive handout is provided.
Basic Web Page Design for the SCA - HL Sgt Duncan Macquarrie 4 hrs - $1.50, max 12 An introduction to the design and creation of web pages for SCAdians including basic HTML. This course is designed for those who wish to create a page for themselves, their household, branch, guild or office. Familiarity with basic computer concepts and document editing are required. Please bring notetaking materials.
Hand Spinning - Mistress Gudrun 2 hrs - $1.50, max 10 This is a hands-on class where the students will learn to spin with a primitive drop spindle. The instructor intends all students to gain an understanding of all necessary equipment for and perhaps the skills needed to spin their own yarns. A primitive drop spindle and wool are provided. Students should not have any wool allergies. However, if you have a wool allergy, and want to take the class, please let the registrar know and another fibre can be substituted. Please bring a small throw rug (to drop spindles on).

Guy Fawkes Revel Come rest, relax and join with friends in conversation after a hard day of classes. St. Giles College (UVic Medieval Club) invites all students, teachers and friends to a Guy Fawkes Revel Saturday night. The Revel will be at the Fairfield Scout Hall, 459 Chester St. The hall will open from 6:30 until 11:00. Beverages and simple fare will be available. Admission $2.00.
